Vanna White has long been the iconic co-host of the game show Wheel of Fortune. Together, she and her fellow co-host, Pat Sajak, welcome contestants onto the popular puzzle game, where they must guess letters to fill in various words and phrases.
Overall, Wheel of Fortune is credited with being the longest running television game show in America, and it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. People of all ages love to watch the show and try to guess the fun word puzzles!
Wheel of Fortune made its television debut in 1975, and was created by Merv Griffin, the mastermind was also behind the famous game show Jeopardy! The show was originally hosted by Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford. In 1981, however, Chuck Woolery left the show, to be replaced by Pat Sajak. Susan Stafford left in 1982, and the coveted position of letter turner was handed over to the lovely Vanna White. Since then, the two have been co-hosting the famous show for nearly forty years!
Vanna White is an icon with her stunning dresses and winning smile. She’s left a far more lasting impact on the show than previous co-host, Susan Stafford. Stafford co-hosted for over ten years before finally deciding to leave in order to pursue her love of humanitarian work. After leaving the position open, applicants all over the world were vying for the position. Of course, it was eventually given to Vanna White, and we’re all incredibly happy it did!
Vanna White may not seem to do much on the show. After all, her main job aside from turning letters and showing off prizes is to stand there and look pretty. However, she’s proven to be more than just a gorgeous model. For example, after Pat Sajak had to go to the hospital for an emergency operation, Vanna White herself took over- and she did an amazing job!
Of course, while we all know Vanna White for her work on Wheel of Fortune, she’s got a very colorful life outside of the show, as well. However, her life hasn’t always been as picturesque as she makes it look on screen. Behind the scenes, Vanna White has had a few devastating romances, as well as a lot of personal tragedies throughout her life. In today’s video, we’re going to take a look at her failed marriages, as well as some of the brighter points in her life. Make sure you stick around, because we’re also going to reveal how her first romance was tragically cut short.
Her Tragic First Romance
Vanna White began dating actor and composer John Gibson in the 1980s. He had appeared in things like Young and the Restless and Warriors. Things were going quite well for the young couple, and they even got engaged. Before they were able to get married, however, tragedy struck.
On May 17th, 1986, John Gibson’s plane crashed in LA, California, and he died. Vanna White was left crushed and heartbroken after the tragic and unlikely accident. In an interview with People, she recalled the moment she found out he had died, explaining that she had fallen to her knees in shock.
While losing a loved one is always difficult, Vanna White was at least lucky that her fans on Wheel of Fortune were there to support her. Many others who had lost friends, family members, and partners in accidents reached out to her, and it helped her feel less alone.
Vanna White Prefers Comfort Over Style
Throughout her career on Wheel of Fortune, she’s worn over 7,000 dresses! Every time she appears on the show, she wears a different dress. However, she doesn’t get to keep a single one. Instead, after the show, the dresses are returned to their designers.
Over the years, Vanna White has worn dresses in every style, according to whatever is in fashion at the time. However, out of all the dresses, no matter how beautiful, she always prefers the ones that are most comfortable. Many of the dresses she has to wear are incredibly tight, and she has a strong preference for dresses that are stretchy, instead, with a particular affinity for cocktail length dresses.
Believe it or not, though, Vanna White rarely wears dresses around the house. Instead, she likes to wear tennis shoes, and often goes without makeup. While she’s all glitz and glam onscreen, she’s very down to earth in her free time.
She Was Put on the Cover of Playboy Against Her Will
When Vanna White moved to Hollywood to pursue her dreams of acting and modeling, she realized she was quite low on money. To make ends meet, she posed for pictures while wearing lingerie. However, the photographer sold those photos to none other than Hugh Hefner. Hefner and White were allegedly friends at the time, and after seeing the pictures, he told her he was going to put her on the cover.
Vanna White explained to him that she didn’t want to be on the cover, for fear that it would ruin her career dreams. He ignored her, however, and put her on the cover against her will. Vanna White was devastated at the treachery, and no longer spoke to him until his death. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she explained that his betrayal had really hurt her feelings.
Her First Marriage
After the unexpected death of her fiance, Vanna White needed some time to heal. A few years later, she met a restaurant owner named George Santo Pietro, and sparks flew immediately. By 1990, the two were married. In 1992, she proudly announced that she was expecting her first child, but she was struck yet again by tragedy.
Only a week after announcing her pregnancy on Wheel of Fortune, she suffered a msicarriage, which left her absolutely devastated. Thankfully, however, she later had two gorgeous children, Nicholas and Giovanni. For unknown reasons, however, Vanna White filed for divorce from George Santo Pietro, and the two were separated in 2002.
Later in life, Vanna White was finally able to find a love that would last. But what about her relationship with co-host Pat Sajak?
