In 1977, she spearheaded the “Save Our Children” campaign in Florida, which sought to overturn a local ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. The campaign, rooted in her conservative Christian beliefs, garnered national attention and sparked significant backlash from LGBTQ+ activists, leading to organized boycotts of Florida orange juice.
The controversy significantly affected Bryant’s career. She lost sponsorship deals, faced declining record sales, and endured public protests. While her activism galvanized conservative supporters, it also made her a polarizing figure and overshadowed her earlier achievements.
In the later years of her life, Bryant faded from public prominence, experiencing personal and financial struggles, including a highly publicized divorce and bankruptcy.
