He also believed dreams had significance. The devout Christian would look through his Bible and couldn’t help but find numerous references to dreams there. He also frequently shared his nighttime musings with his friends and family. He’d send letters to his beloved Mary if a dream seemed to provide an ominous warning about their son.
Abe’s final day was a pleasant one. He went for a carriage ride and enjoyed the theater with his wife. However, a few nights before weren’t as calm. He was kept awake by an ominous dream. It was so frightening that he couldn’t forget about it for days. It was also scary enough for him to tell his friends to get it off his chest. He told his wife and one of his closest compatriots, Ward Hill Lamon, who wrote it down in a book.
It has been documented in the historical record for years. Historians wonder if it was a prophetic warning about the assassination to come. Others doubt whether it ever happened. Either way, it shows that Abe’s mind hadn’t given itself permission to fully rest when the war was won. He knew there was still work to be done and may have sensed he wouldn’t be around to help do it.
