Take a closer look at the city itself. The ways the citizens use animals to keep their prehistoric city running are as creative as they are exploitative. Fred Flintstone may be entertaining, but he isn’t a model citizen. Most sitcom leading men aren’t. He’s an exploitative, manipulative man who struggles with gambling and drinking. He doesn’t treat his wife as well as he could, but she’s always ready with a club to hand it right back to him. He also uses the devotion of his best friend Barney to his benefit.

Speaking of Barney, his character arc is the darkest in the entire series. He and his wife, Betty, struggled with infertility for years. When it seemed like their prayers were answered but then taken away again, he almost couldn’t survive it. Believe it or not, there are even Flintstones episodes you may have never seen. They were banned or taken out of syndication. Some were removed because they included stereotypical portrayals of ethnic groups. Others went too far with their jokes, hinting at topics such as spousal abuse or suggesting foul language.

These episodes remain an important part of the show’s history and the history of animation in general. They show how far it was willing to go and how the landscape of what’s allowed on TV has changed. Like and subscribe to FactsVerse for more on the best classic cartoons of all time.
