Its members combined jazzy sounds and hard-to-decipher, often risque lyrics. The world was ready for something new, and it responded. The band shifted members often, but none of them expected it ever to grow as much as it did. Some members didn’t get to live to see how much of an impact the band would have.

Drummer Jeff Paraco died of a heart attack at the age of 38. During that time, he had a major impact on the musical world through his work with Steeley Dan and other bands, and his contributions will not soon be forgotten. Roger Nicholas was the band’s talented producer, and he also died of cancer. He contributed to the sound of several musicians beyond Steely Dan, making him an important figure in the music scene.
Jim Holder drowned in his swimming pool. Steeley Dan plucked the talented musician out of Boston. The death of the band’s co-founder, Walter Becker, was shrouded in controversy for some time. His widow confirmed he suffered a long battle with cancer. Donald Fagen, the other founder of Steeley Dan, is left to preserve the band’s legacy. That means producing more music the other members would be proud of.
He has to do this while fighting a legal battle. He’s in a dispute over how much of the Steeley Dan name Walter’s estate should own. All fans can hope is that it’s settled amicably so that it doesn’t get in the way of more great music.
