He worked alongside Hollywood legends like Gregory Peck and Yul Brynner, leaving a mark in Westerns, crime dramas, and anthology series like The Twilight Zone. Despite his professional success, his personal life was fraught with difficulties. His first marriage to Peggy Ann Garner ended in divorce, and his second marriage to Roberta Pollock Taper eventually turned toxic. As his career declined in the 1980s, so did his emotional stability. Moving to Spokane, Washington, in search of a quieter life, he found himself increasingly isolated. Alcoholism and financial troubles weighed on him, and his marriage to Roberta crumbled under allegations of abuse.
In early 1990, she filed for divorce and obtained a restraining order, a move that seemed to send Salmi into a downward spiral. On April 23, 1990, in an act of devastating finality, he shot Roberta before turning the gun on himself. The murder-suicide left family, friends, and colleagues struggling to reconcile the man they had admired with the horrific crime he committed. His daughter Jennifer later reflected on the tragedy, saying, “He was my father, and I know there was good in him. But I can’t excuse what he did.” Albert Salmi’s life and legacy remain defined by both his talent and his darkest moment.
