Jimmy Page has rudimentary music knowledge. He doesn’t let it stop him and doesn’t feel that he needs to learn any more. Elvis, the king of rock and roll, flunked music. He became a star thanks to his perfectly turned ears that could remember a song after hearing it once. Dave Brubeck was almost expelled from college for not learning to read music fully. He graduated and managed to churn out songs like the mysterious Take Five.
Freddie Mercury wrote the incredibly complex Bohemian Rhapsody without being able to read music. His massive range and in-tune ear were enough. None of the members of The Beatles knew how to read or write what they were playing. Their unique harmony somehow came together anyway.
Taylor Swift, one of the most successful modern singers, can’t read music. She doesn’t like to deal with the technical side of songwriting at all.
Kurt Cobain of Nirvana said that learning music theory was a waste of time. He felt it stifled creativity. Drummer David Khrole also never learned to read music and goes more with feeling.
Master guitars like Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Hendrix never read notes for their guitar. Masters of the piano such as Billy Joel and Stevie Wonder also couldn’t read sheet music.
You don’t even have to be able to read music to write it. Many famous composers, including Irving Berlin, Danny Elfman, and Hanz Zimmer all found ways around it.
