Originally sailing from Goa, India, to Lisbon, Portugal, the ship carried not only vast wealth in gold, pearls, and jewels but also high-ranking officials and hundreds of enslaved individuals. After a violent storm left her weakened, the vessel was an easy target for the pirates, who seized her cargo before deliberately sinking her near Île Sainte-Marie, a notorious pirate haven.
For centuries, the wreck lay hidden beneath layers of sand and silt until researchers from the Center for Historic Shipwreck Preservation located it after 16 years of investigation. More than 3,300 artifacts have been recovered, including gold coins inscribed with Arabic, fine porcelain, and religious relics such as an ivory plaque reading “INRI.” This find not only tells the tale of one of history’s most audacious pirate raids but also offers invaluable insights into colonial trade, maritime warfare, and the lives touched by this voyage.
