Why Marlon Brando’s Co-Stars HATED Him While Filming the Island of Dr. Moreau

What’s the strangest film you’ve ever seen? Weird doesn’t mean bad. A film’s strangeness can be its greatest strength and make it compelling. It can also be what tears audiences away. The story of The Island of Dr. Moreau was already strange when it was a book by H.G. Wells. It was about a doctor creating human-animal hybrids on a secluded island.

Richard Stanley saw it as a powerful moral fable and a testament to human survival. He dreamed of turning it into a film. There was some initial promise, but it didn’t take long for the crew to assume that the production was cursed. Everything seemed to be against them. The weather of the Australian outback was gruelling for everyone involved. Intense heat blared down on their heads. They also had to contend with natural disasters such as hurricanes.

There were countless rewrites. No one seemed to agree on or even read the script. That only added to the existing shooting delays. Everyone spent more time sitting around in the heat than actually trying to get a scene completed. The cast was shuffled around throughout pre-production, and the results showed. The problem was that the crew couldn’t get along. Val Kilmer was the lead, but his style clashed with that of his director.

Marlon Brando seemed like he would be the greatest asset of a strange film like Dr. Moreau. He was actually its greatest liability. The film was made during the later era of his career when he’d become an irritable diva. Dealing with his demands was part of what made the film such a major flop.
