The man in the boat has been floating around in search of land. When he sees the land, he is happy to get out of the boat. This just goes to show you how two people in the same situation can see the rescue completely differently.

The inmate on the left has a happier, more upbeat view of life. He ignored the metal bars that are keeping him incarcerated. This shows the different views that each convict has of their situation. The man who saw the bars has a negative outlook of his situation while the man on the right seems much more positive.
