Lockhart began her career on stage at the age of eight and later won a Tony Award for her Broadway debut in For Love or Money in 1947. She also starred in several films, such as Meet Me in St. Louis, Sergeant York, The Yearling, and Son of Lassie. However, she is famous for her television roles as Ruth Martin on Lassie, which airs from 1958 to 1964, Maureen Robinson on Lost in Space (1965-1968), and Dr. Janet Craig on Petticoat Junction (1968-1970).
