According to Anderson, he opened his robe and exposed himself on her first day of filming, allegedly joking that it was “only fair” since he had seen her nude in Playboy. Allen denied the accusation, calling it fabricated, but the allegation raised questions about his behavior behind the scenes. While Richardson did not comment directly on Anderson’s claim, she did reveal that Allen once flashed her as part of what he saw as a joke. She described the incident as harmless, saying, “He was wearing boxer shorts, and it was in the middle of a scene. He lifted his kilt and it was really silly, and it wasn’t anything offensive.” However, her reaction suggested that she had learned to tolerate Allen’s antics rather than be surprised by them.
Beyond these moments, Richardson has spoken about how challenging it was to work with Allen, particularly because he had so much control over Home Improvement. “Tim had a lot of power on that show,” she recalled. “There were times when I had to really stand up for myself.” She often fought to ensure that Jill Taylor was more than just a background character, a battle she felt she shouldn’t have had to fight. While she remained professional, the imbalance of influence and the occasional difficulties with Allen contributed to her decision to leave the show and ultimately cut ties with him altogether.
