When Jaclyn Smith took on her iconic Charlie’s Angels role in the mid-1970s, she quickly rocketed to superstardom! The series of three titular Angels, the codename of spies working for a mysterious figure, Charles Townsend, or Charlie. Jaclyn is one of the three original Angels on the series. The only of the original three actresses to remain on the show for the entirety of its run. The name of Jaclyn’s character was Kelly Garrett, and the character quickly became incredibly popular amongst the television audience.
As Charlie’s Angels grow in popularity, Jaclyn watches as her character plasters on an endless variety of merchandise. The Angels can on trading cards, candy, and toys, and they even got their very own board game! As one might imagine, this merchandising proves lucrative, and Jaclyn can’t help but account as the money keeps rolling in. By the time Charlie’s Angels come to an end in 1981, Jaclyn gets a crash course in branding.
After Charlie’s Angels, Jaclyn struggles around in the entertainment industry for several years before a striking business opportunity arose. Kmart approached the actress with a proposition. The store wanted her to develop her own unique line of budget women’s sportswear. Though Jaclyn’s management insists that forming a relationship with the big-box store isn’t a good idea, Jaclyn feels different. Thankfully, Jaclyn’s correct, as her initial deal with Kmart makes it easier for the actress to develop her own empire!
KMART TO JACLYN SMITH
Kmart approaches Jaclyn Smith with its lucrative offer, the store is the second-largest retailer in all of the United States! The Jaclyn Smith Collection makes available for the first time at Kmart stores in August of 1985. Kmart just wants to use Jaclyn’s name and call it a day. The actress insists that she’s a hand in the design of the products that are to bear her brand. According to many, this is a big part of why the Jaclyn Smith Collection was such a huge success!
In addition to lending her hand to designing the Jaclyn Smith Collection, Jaclyn promotes her line of clothing at Kmart. The line is an immense success. It’s a simple line of budget women’s sportswear that blossoms for all periods of the day. The line of products bearing Jaclyn’s brand expands out into accessories, with the Jaclyn Collection including shoes, sunglasses, and jewelry.
BUSINESS LIFE
2007 saw Jaclyn expand into fabrics as she got into business with decorative fabric company Fabricut. Jaclyn Smith Home, Jaclyn’s collection sells through Fabricut’s budget division, known as Trend. 2008 saw Jaclyn expand her business venture with Kmart. Jaclyn Smith Collection grows to include bathroom and bedroom décor, with an expansion into general home furnishings soon after that. Her relationship with Kmart is successful despite Kmart’s struggle in the past decade to maintain control over the market. Jaclyn and her daughter worked together to develop infant clothing for the previously prestigious big-box store in 2014. KMART STORES
Although Kmart is no longer the successful retailer that it is, Jaclyn finds success with the retailer in recent years. In 2017, it estimates that there are a million items in the Jaclyn Smith Collection sold at various Kmart stores. Currently, there are 17 Kmart stores in America, though Jaclyn still with other business ventures continuing to flourish elsewhere.
Besides the Jaclyn Smith Collection, Jaclyn develops a skincare line with her current husband in 2010 that she still sells. Jaclyn’s current husband is Brad Allen, who is a cardiothoracic surgeon. Jaclyn also sells a line of wigs, known as STYLE by Jaclyn Smith.
COMEBACK TO CHARLIE’S ANGELS
While most of Jaclyn Smith’s current ventures are in the realm of business, the actress isn’t above returning to the screen so long as she feels the job is right. When star Elizabeth Banks was helming the 2019 reboot of Charlie’s Angels, she asked if Jaclyn Smith would like to make a cameo in the film. Jaclyn agreed as she has always had very fond memories of her time on the original series. According to Jaclyn, she’d be nowhere if it weren’t for Charlie’s Angels, though it’s hard to deny that it has been Jaclyn’s own ingenuity that has allowed her to make good on the promise of her Charlie’s Angels fame the way she has.
2021 SERIES ALL AMERICAN
More recently, Jaclyn can in a 2021 episode of the series All American. This role may indicate that Jaclyn is looking to get back into the public eye with a few more acting gigs, which would certainly be a welcome change! Though the actress is 76 years old nowadays, she looks better than ever! She could certainly find a place for herself on television, though it seems she still very much enjoys being on the controlling end of her business ventures.
Jaclyn has certainly come a very long way over the course of her nearly eight decades on Earth! The actress was born in Houston, Texas, on October 26, 1945. After graduating high school, Jaclyn had originally aspired to be a professional ballerina. While practicing ballet, she began taking small acting gigs on television to pay the bills, including some notable roles in commercials. 1973 saw Jaclyn get a noteworthy gig shilling for Breck Shampoo, while her iconic role on Charlie’s Angels came a few years later, in 1976.
ORIGINAL STARS
As Charlie’s Angels and its three original titular stars grew in popularity, Jaclyn remained the only one of the three original Angels to stay on the series throughout all five of its seasons. After the series came to an end in 1981, Jaclyn continued acting consistently throughout the 1980s, in addition to creating the Jaclyn Smith Collection for Kmart.
In 1981, the aptly named Jaclyn took on the title role in the made-for-television biopic Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. Jaclyn’s role in the feature was an immense success and resulted in her receiving a Golden Globe nomination. Later in the decade, she had a successful role in a miniseries based upon Robert Ludlum’s novel The Bourne Identity, The miniseries aired in 1988, and Jaclyn could be seen in another miniseries by the name of Windmills of the Gods the same year. Entering the 1990s, Jaclyn Smith became much more interested in expanding her brand than continuing to perform on television, though she has still continued to pop up every once in a while!
JACLIN SMITH AND BRAD ALLEN
While Jaclyn Smith is currently happily married to the previously mentioned Brad Allen, the doctor is actually the actress’s fourth husband that she has had throughout her life so far. The two married in 1997, and there seems to be a good chance that they’ll be together for the rest of their lives! Prior to being married to Brad, Jaclyn had three relatively short marriages, starting with her marriage to Roger Davis in 1968. Jaclyn and Roger remained married until 1975, and Jaclyn married for the second time in 1978. Jaclyn’s second husband was Dennis Cole, and the two only remained married until 1981, the same year that Charlie’s Angels officially ended its five-season run.
THE THREE SPOUSES
In between Dennis Cole and Brad Allen, Jaclyn was married to Anthony B. Richmond throughout the majority of the 1980s. She married Anthony in 1981 after divorcing Dennis, and the two remained together until 1989. Jaclyn had two children with Anthony B. Richmond, with them being Spencer and Gaston. It was Spencer that helped Jaclyn design her line of baby clothes for Kmart in 2014, and Spencer’s daughter helped take part in the ad campaign.
After divorcing the father of her two children, Jaclyn remained unmarried throughout the majority of the 1990s before finally tying the knot with Brad Allen in 1997. The two are still married currently, making Jaclyn’s fourth marriage the most successful one that she’s had by far! Jaclyn loves spending time with her family when she can, claiming that taking it easy with them is what keeps her looking young.
