David Crosby’s life was as unconventional as his approach to fatherhood. While he built a legendary career in music, his personal relationships—especially with his children—were often complicated. His first son, James Raymond, was placed for adoption in 1962, a decision Crosby later admitted was made out of irresponsibility rather than intention. Decades later, when they reunited, they discovered not only a shared passion for music but a deep connection that led to a creative partnership in the band CPR. Crosby often called James “the son he never knew he wanted” and viewed their bond as a second chance at fatherhood.

His involvement with Melissa Etheridge’s children, Bailey and Beckett, was less traditional. As a sperm donor, he played a biological role but was never a father figure. When Beckett tragically passed away due to opioid addiction, Crosby mourned but acknowledged that his role in the young man’s life had been limited. His other children, Erika Keller Crosby and Donovan Crosby, remained private figures, with little public information about their relationships with him. His son David Caleb, however, gained attention for entirely different reasons when he was arrested for participating in the January 6th insurrection.
He was later pardoned by Donald Trump, a stark contrast to Crosby’s own political views, and it is unclear how much of a relationship they had. In his later years, Crosby found stability in his youngest son, Django, whom he raised with his wife, Jan Dance. Unlike his other children, Django was a daily presence in his life, becoming one of his closest companions. While Crosby was the first to admit he had not always been a good father, he spent his later years making amends, reconnecting where he could, and accepting the complicated nature of the family he had built.
