There are several types of dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the most common. Millions of patients suffer from them, and deaths are on the rise. Aphasia, or difficulty speaking and understanding speech, is one of the first major signs. Patients may use the wrong words, forget the names of everyday items, or struggle to comprehend what’s being said to them.

Other symptoms show up as well. General memory loss is the most common. Patients may also forget where they are or what time it is. They can struggle to follow simple instructions. Hearing loss is a lesser-known but common symptom. It’s important to get tested as soon as you notice any of these symptoms to determine if dementia is behind them. Try getting brain imaging or taking the self-administered SAGE exam.

There is no definitive cure for dementia, but treatments have been proposed. Certain medications can ease symptoms. Speech pathologists can teach patients how to express themselves. An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure for dementia. Exercise is especially impressive at reducing symptoms of aphasia. The best thing for caregivers with loved ones who have dementia is to be patient. They may have to learn entirely new ways of speaking or behaving around them. It’s a difficult road for anyone, and more research is needed to find the light at the end of the tunnel.
