Randy Travis is one of the most beloved. His calm yet powerful voice has been charming fans for decades. He’s sold countless records and created a long list of hits. Major health scares forced him to put it all on hold. First, it was a problem with his heart. Then, it was problems with his brain. A stroke left him with aphasia, an inability to speak and remember words. That also meant he couldn’t sing.
It left him down but not defeated. He’d do anything he could to start to sing again, even if it meant studying a song for hours a day. Technology is now his greatest ally. It’s allowed him to go back on tour. Using AI to combine his voice with James Dupre’s, a devoted superfan, has allowed him to sing again. It’s like he’s been given his voice back.
Randy also doesn’t refrain from public appearances. His wife Mary helps him find the words in interviews, but he’s not shying away from the spotlight just yet. That also meant that, when the Grand Ole Opry held its 100th anniversary celebration, he had to be there. He was one of its earliest members and remains one of its best.
