In 2011, Bongino left the Secret Service to pursue a political career. He ran as a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maryland in 2012 but was unsuccessful. Undeterred, he sought a congressional seat in Maryland in 2014 and later in Florida in 2016; however, both campaigns did not result in election victories. Despite these setbacks, Bongino remained a prominent figure in conservative circles.
In February 2025, President Trump appointed Bongino as the Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), serving under Director Kash Patel. This appointment marked a departure from the FBI’s tradition of selecting career agents for leadership roles, as Bongino’s background was primarily in the Secret Service and media rather than within the FBI itself. His selection was met with mixed reactions; supporters praised his dedication to conservative principles, while critics expressed concerns over his lack of FBI experience and his history of promoting unsubstantiated claims.
Throughout his career, Bongino has faced criticism from current and former FBI officials. Some have voiced concerns about his qualifications for the Deputy Director role, emphasizing the importance of extensive FBI experience for such a position. Additionally, Bongino’s history of disseminating misinformation, particularly regarding the 2020 election and the COVID-19 pandemic, has drawn scrutiny. Misinformation experts have identified him as a significant figure in spreading false claims, leading to debates about his suitability for a leadership role in a federal law enforcement agency.
