Alex Carson
Pat Sajak, born Patrick Leonard Sajdak on October 26, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, is an American television personality best known as the longtime host of the popular game show Wheel of Fortune. Raised in a working-class Polish-American family, Sajak attended Columbia College Chicago and worked as a desk clerk at the Palmer House hotel before entering broadcasting. His career began in radio during the Vietnam War, where he served as a disc jockey for the American Forces Vietnam Network.

Sajak’s early television career included weather reporting for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, where his on-screen charisma caught the attention of Merv Griffin, the creator of Wheel of Fortune. In 1981, Griffin selected Sajak to replace Chuck Woolery as host of the daytime version of the show. Despite initial resistance from NBC executives, Sajak began hosting the show and quickly became a household name. His calm demeanor, quick wit, and affable presence resonated with viewers and contributed significantly to the show’s enduring popularity.
Alongside co-host Vanna White, Sajak helped turn Wheel of Fortune into a cultural institution. The syndicated evening version, which he began hosting in 1983, became one of the most-watched television programs in the United States. Sajak won several Daytime Emmy Awards and holds a Guinness World Record for the longest career as a game show host for the same show.
Beyond Wheel of Fortune, Sajak pursued other ventures, including a brief late-night talk show in the late 1980s, guest hosting on various programs, and contributing columns to conservative publications. He is also known for his philanthropy and interest in political commentary.
In June 2023, Sajak announced his retirement, set for 2024, marking the end of a four-decade run on Wheel of Fortune. His legacy as a fixture of American television and game show history remains firmly established.
