They Tape Five Shows a Day

If you’re used to tuning into Jeopardy! every night, you may imagine that the episodes are filmed following a similar time schedule. However, as you probably already know, television shows use a lot of tricks to create certain illusions. For example, even though Jeopardy! episodes might seem like they are filmed on separate days, five episodes are actually taped at once. Every other week, the film crew, contestants, and host spend two days taping five episodes on each day.

Contestants are actually required to bring extra sets of clothes, to make it seem like the episodes were filmed on different days. This makes the episode feel more current to audience members. By making it seem like the episode was only just filmed, audience members are more likely to be engaged. Of course, it wouldn’t make sense for the crew to film on separate days; it’s far more efficient and cost-effective to film it all at once.

Trebek Had a Penchant for Swearing

Film editing is an amazing invention, and it can change a lot. Fans who watched Alex Trebek on Jeopardy! episodes will remember him for his witty comebacks and charming banter. On TV, he seems slick and prepared at all times. While Alex Trebek certainly was a great host, it’s important to remember than any television host has to carefully craft a person that audience members will jive with. Alex Trebek was great at staying in character… most of the time. But in some exclusive footage recently released, fans were surprised and amused to discover that Alex Trebek was just as human as the rest of us.

No matter how hard Trebek tried to stay in character at all times, sometimes he lost his persona for a few moments. There’s even footage of him swearing in front of the contestants! Of course, the swearing was removed from the final product, but it’s hilarious to imagine what the show would have been like if the editors had left those moments in.

The Origin Behind the Famous Theme Song

The iconic theme song of Jeopardy! is one of the most notorious earworms out there. It’s annoyingly catchy, and a favorite tune for children to whistle and hum. The theme song was actually composed by the creator of the show, Merv Griffin, but it wasn’t originally written for Jeopardy!

Today, the catchy melody is titled “Think,” but Griffin originally named it “Time for Tony.” He composed the song as a lullaby for his son, Tony, in the late 1960s. Unusually, he decided to copyright the melody so nobody else could take it. Fifteen years later, he recycled the tune for his newly created game show. It’s no wonder children remember the song so easily!

After copyrighting the melody, Merv Griffin made over $80 million from the song alone!

Alex Trebek Was Always Humble

Most fans readily agree that Alex Trebek was the star of Jeopardy! but Trebek himself shied away from the term. In an interview in 2012, he explained that being a host is very different from being a star. His job was always to make contestants comfortable, and to help them perform their best. Trebek always made it his goal to let the contestants shine as the real stars of the show. According to Trebek, if a host tries to steal the limelight, the contestants won’t get the opportunity to show off their true skills and charisma. Trebek took his job as host very seriously, and with his experience in showbusiness, he could make the show run smoothly even if contestants were nervous or fumbled.

Unsurprisingly, Alex Trebek wasn’t just a kind person while filming Jeopardy! He was deeply beloved by all of his friends and family. Towards the end of his life, he received tons of support from thousands of fans. Make sure you stick around until the very end of this video, where we’ll reveal Alex Trebek’s bittersweet parting. Everybody Wants to Be on Jeopardy!

Some people are content just to watch the show air, but hundreds of thousands of hopeful people are desperate to compete for fame and money on Jeopardy! The applicant pool is staggering, meaning that the show’s creators have to put a lot of thought into the application process. First, all prospective contestants have to take a very difficult online test. If they succeed, they’re selected for an audition. The producers don’t just want people who are skilled at trivia; they also want people who are interesting for audience members to watch. After the audition process, there are even more tests to trim down the pool. Finally, only about 400 contestants are accepted every season. With hundreds of thousands of people vying for a spot on Jeopardy! every year, that means there’s only about a 0.5% acceptance rate.

It Takes Awhile for Contestants to Receive Prize Money

Most people who fantasize about competing on Jeopardy! imagine taking home piles of cash immediately after their victory. However, this isn’t exactly the case. Reportedly, contestants actually have to wait three to five months to receive their prize cash. While this may seem disappointing, it’s for a good reason. It takes a while for the crew to verify the person’s identity. Without this process, there could be a lot of cheating and fraud involved in the game.

Ryan Reynolds Recalls His Last Conversation with Alex Trebek

Two months before the host’s tragic death, famous actor Ryan Reynolds had a touching and impactful phone call with him. After Trebek’s death, Reynolds recalled the bittersweet memory with fondness. Ryan Reynolds had nothing but kind words for Trebek, writing, “He was gracious and funny, in addition to being curious, stalwart, generous, reassuring and of course, Canadian.”

A Death Surrounded by Loved Ones

After his death, he was cremated, and his ashes rest at home with his beloved wife, Jean Trebek, in Studio City, California. Alex Trebek was a great inspiration for people all over the world, but he was especially beloved by his friends and family members, who always described him as a gracious, humble, and kind man.
