The Princess Bride turned out to be one of the most beloved fantasy films of all time. Like many others, it didn’t start that way. The author of the book it was based on prayed every day for its success. Wallace Shawn was the third choice for the part of Vizzini and couldn’t believe in himself. It seemed like the film would just be another flash in the fairy tale pan.

Everyone was eventually proven wrong. It wasn’t an initial hit at the box office, but it became one of the fantasy genre’s biggest and most enduring cult classics. It was majorly thanks to the perfectly chosen cast. Andre the Giant brought a larger-than-life presence, even if he struggled to learn his lines. Cary Ewles was willing to go above and beyond for the right shot, even if he got injured in the process. Mandy Patinkin had a deep personal connection to Inigo Montoya that shined onscreen.
The well-written script gave them instantly quotable lines to deliver. Their unique skill let them deliver them in ways that made them stay in the minds of the public for decades.

There was one character that had a short time on screen but was a major part of its success. The great Billy Crystal made Miracle Max not only a scene-stealer but a movie-stealer. He was brought up in a tradition of improv and free-flowing jazz. He came up with the character’s signature look and delivered many of his memorable lines off the cuff.
