That kind of massive success doesn’t come without careful planning. Showrunner Chuck Lorre ran a tight ship, and he had rules that everyone on set had to follow. No one could ever mention the unaired pilot. It was so different from the final product that Chuck was ashamed of it. Most of the world didn’t even know it existed until it aired online.
Maintaining the show’s reputation and the character’s nerd image required knowledge of science. Mayim Biayalik, who played Amy, has a PhD in neuroscience. The rest of the cast also had to take basic lessons to sound at least vaguely like they knew what they were talking about. Working on the show was fun for cast members and extras, but it may have left their stomachs empty despite filling their hearts. No one could eat during the shooting.
The stars of The Big Bang Theory had to promote it, no matter what they were doing or what they were being interviewed for. The promotional materials also always put the three main cast members in the front. The rest started moving in as they became more prominent. The three main characters were so important that, if one of them left, the showrunners were determined to shut it down. That’s eventually what happened, but at least it didn’t overstay its welcome. The show can live in the hearts of TV watchers without overstaying its welcome.
