Christina Applegate’s Troubling Diagnosis Doesn’t Have a Cure

Former Married… with Children star Christina Applegate recently shared some troubling news with fans, and that news was that the actress has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis, which is often abbreviated simply as MS, is a disease with no known cure. Christina’s diagnosis comes in the wake of other health problems that she has overcome over the past few decades. Even though it seems that the beloved actress can’t catch a break as far her health is concerned, she’s staying positive and has some work lined up. Join Facts Verse as we explore how Christina Applegate’s troubling diagnosis doesn’t have a cure.

Christina Applegate Has Been Diagnosed with MS

In August of 2021, when Christina Applegate was only 49 years old, she revealed to the public some troubling news. It turns out that the beloved television actress has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis or MS. This disease has no known cure, but Christina is still trying to keep her head up. The actress had been diagnosed with the disease several months before revealing her diagnosis to the public, and it was far from being the first piece of health-related bad news that she has had to share with her fans over the years.

Between the time that she got the diagnosis and the moment that she decided to reveal the news to her adoring fans, Christina Applegate was undergoing a difficult journey of acceptance. Thankfully, Christina was aided in her acceptance of the diagnosis by a strong support network. This network of support included members of the MS community, with some of them even being Christina’s Hollywood peers! One such Hollywood peer of Christina’s that shares the actress’s diagnosis of MS is Selma Blair, who was diagnosed with the incurable disease in 2017.

Following Christina Applegate’s public revelation of her MS diagnosis, Selma Blair could be seen tweeting at the actress to keep her chin up. However, it seems that Christina isn’t looking for all that much support from the public. Instead, what the actress really wants is simple acceptance. It seems that, despite the public announcement of her diagnosis, Christina still wants to keep both her struggles and her journey as private as possible. It seems that, instead of seeking sympathy, Christina made her public announcement just because she wanted to be honest with her fans.

This Isn’t Christina’s First Health Scare

As far as Christina is concerned, she’s going to wake up every morning and do her best to live with the diagnosis that she has been given. The actress’s diagnosis of MS is far from the only health concern that has plagued her throughout her life. In fact, it seems that the actress has been in the news for health-related reasons several times over the past couple of decades. The majority of Christina’s health problems seem to stem back to 2008, which is the year that the actress was diagnosed with breast cancer.

When Christina Applegate was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, the actress took the diagnosis in stride, just as she is doing now with her MS diagnosis. However, the cancer diagnosis may not have seemed quite as bleak, as there were plenty of things that Christina could do to try and make the cancer go away. Christina ended up battling her cancer head on, and has gone on to beat it! Following the diagnosis, Christina underwent a double mastectomy. After undergoing the double mastectomy, Christina’s breast cancer was gone from her body, and it hasn’t returned since. Still, the double mastectomy was no easy procedure, and it has had lasting effects on Christina’s self-esteem.

For those that don’t know what a mastectomy is, it’s a surgery that women undergo to have a breast removed. This generally happens when a woman is either diagnosed with, or considered extremely susceptible to getting, breast cancer. A double mastectomy, then, would be when women have both of their breasts removed, which is what Christina did. While Christina Applegate’s double mastectomy made it so that she could keep on living, having to do so without her breasts has understandably been a challenge for the star.

Christina’s Double Mastectomy Hurt Her Self-Esteem

Christina Applegate isn’t the only notable actress that has had to live through a double mastectomy and deal with the impact that the surgery has had on her career and self-esteem. Another notable star that underwent a double mastectomy is Angelina Jolie. When looking at either Christina Applegate or Angelina Jolie on the red carpet today, anyone would be hard-pressed to see a difference between the stars’ beautiful appearances now and their appearances from before their double mastectomies. However, the differences become much more apparent to the stars themselves when it comes time to undress.

According to Christina Applegate, she has come to terms with the consequences that her double mastectomy has had on her body and image, but she still hasn’t quite gotten used to looking down in the shower and seeing that her breasts are no longer there. Despite this, the actress has kept a positive outlook, and was even able to turn the negative experience into art via her ongoing performance in the Netflix series Dead to Me! Dead to Me Helped Christina Embrace Her New Self

Many years after undergoing her double mastectomy, Christina Applegate was given the opportunity to star on the Netflix series Dead to Me, which also stars Linda Cardellini. On the series, Christina plays the character of Jen Harding. Prior to the start of the series, the character of Jen had undergone a double mastectomy after receiving the news that her mother had passed away from breast cancer. The show then follows Jen as she comes to terms with her new life.

Getting to play the role of Jen Harding has proved therapeutic for Christina, as many of the problems that Jen has had to deal with throughout the series so far are the same as the ones that Christina herself has had to deal with following her own double mastectomy. These include, of course, various body-image issues. Christina is glad for the opportunity to be able to work through her trauma, and she’s also glad that Jen’s journey on Dead to Me may prove therapeutic to audience members that have experienced similar problems. Mastectomies are certainly not uncommon, and Dead to Me provides some great representation for women in the audience that have undergone the procedure.

Dead to Me’s third, and supposedly final, season is set to premiere sometime around the latter half of 2022. Meanwhile, it seems that Christina is slowly but surely coming to terms with her recent diagnosis of MS. The actress recently did a Q&A on social media where a fan asked her what her plans were for the year. With a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, the actress proclaimed that her plans for the year were to find a cure for the incurable disease that she was recently diagnosed with. One can assume that Christina was at least partly serious, though the remark was inarguably meant to be taken as a joke.

Christina Can Bring More Attention to MS

It’s doubtful that a cure for MS will be found within Christina’s lifetime, but the actress receiving the disease and publicly talking about the consequences of the diagnosis will undoubtedly help bring more awareness to the illness and those who suffer from it. In the long run, this kind of exposure may very well help put an end to the disease, though it’s not likely to happen anytime soon. Some of the many other stars that have been diagnosed with MS over the years include the aforementioned Selma Blair, as well as Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Joan Didion, Montel Williams, and Jack Osbourne. Of these stars, Christina Applegate is certainly one of the more high profile, and the actress will hopefully be able to do some significant work in the coming years spreading awareness.

Christina Applegate celebrated her 50th birthday in November of 2021, and she did so with her husband and daughter. Christina has been married twice over the years, and has only one child. Her first husband was a minor actor by the name of Johnathon Schaech, whom she was married to from 2001 to 2007. Around the time of her breast cancer diagnosis, Christina had become romantically involved with musician Martyn LeNoble, who is better known as the bassist of the Perry Farrell-led band Porno for Pyros.

After Christina successfully beat her breast cancer, she and Martyn went on to have a daughter named Sadie Grace LeNoble in 2011. Sadie is Christina’s first and only daughter, and she is now 11 years old! Following the birth of Sadie, Christina and Martyn went on to tie the knot in 2013, and they are still together today. While the birth of Sadie following Christina’s breast-cancer battle was certainly a minor miracle, it seems that no more children are on the horizon for the star. Not long after the birth of Sadie, Christina underwent a surgical procedure to have her fallopian tubes and ovaries removed. It seems that the same gene that made Christina so susceptible to getting breast cancer was also going to make her susceptible to getting ovarian cancer, and the surgery was meant to prevent this.

A Married… with Children Animated Reboot Is Coming

In the midst of her current battle with MS, Christina Applegate has found a slightly unlikely comrade in the form of former Married… with Children costar David Faustino. Of course, David was the actor who played Christina’s on-screen younger brother on the series. While David doesn’t have MS himself, he has been an active participant in the Race to Erase MS for many years. The Race to Erase MS is a charitable event, and David has been attending for roughly three decades as result of his friendship with the event’s late founder, who was former first lady Nancy Davis Reagan.

It seems that Christina and David are going to be seeing a lot of each other in the near future even besides the MS connection, as a new animated reboot of Married… with Children was recently announced the will feature the main cast returning to voice their original characters. Christina is certainly staying busy, and positive, in her career.

While Christina Applegate has received a plethora of troubling health-related news over the past few decades, the actress has consistently kept her chin up. Now it’s time to hear from you: did you know that Christina Applegate gave birth to her first and only daughter after undergoing a double mastectomy, and that the actress has since had her fallopian tubes and ovaries removed?
