SAM ELLIOTT AND WESTERNS
Sam Elliott was born in Sacramento, California, and spent his teenage years in Portland, Oregon. His parents were originally from El Paso, Texas, which is likely where he got his notable Southern drawl from. It’s his family background that inspired his love for Westerns.
While he’s a versatile actor who has appeared in thrillers, dramas, and comedies, there’s a special place in his heart for Westerns. John Wayne and Clint Eastwood have long been quintessential Western actors, and any serious fan of Westerns will agree that Sam Elliott should also be on that list. It’s hard to imagine a modern-day Western film or TV show without him!
He decided to pursue acting in the 1960s, which was unusual for his family. His father wasn’t sure if Sam would succeed as an actor. But Sam was eager to pursue an acting career and become a major star. His appearance, build, and deep voice made him perfect for Westerns.
Sam Elliott Acting Career
In fact, Sam Elliott began his acting career in Westerns. His first film acting gig was an uncredited bit part in the 1967 Western The Way West. He even had a bit part in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
His early TV work included a recurring role in the Western series Lancer. He also appeared in an episode of Gunsmoke. His first major role in a Western was in the 1972 film Molly and Lawless John. His early work established him as a notable character actor. But he was determined to make it as a lead actor.
Sam’s Big Break
But his big break came in 1993 with the Western drama film Tombstone. In this film, he played Virgil Earp – one of the most famous cowboys in the Old West and brother of the notorious Wyatt Earp and Morgan Earp. The Earp Brothers bravely fought against a band of outlaws in Tombstone, Arizona.
This was the film that designated Sam Elliott as the quintessential actor for anything Western. He continued to act in popular Western films and TV shows following the incredible success of Tombstone.
These included roles in The Desperate Trail, Buffalo Girls, The Hi-Lo Country, Justified, and The Ranch. Y: 1883 is his latest TV Western project, and we’re sure that fans won’t be disappointed with his work.
We hope that Shea Brennan will be a recurring character throughout the new series. As of now, it’s confirmed via IMDB that he’s appearing in all 10 episodes of the first season. Shea Brennan is a mysterious cowboy with a troubled past. This blend of toughness and emotional complexity is something that only a brilliant actor like Sam Elliott can pull off!

BEHIND THE SCENES
From what we know so far, Y: 1883 has only been filming down in Texas for a few months. The trailer had a few scenes of what to expect from the show and a brief narration. It didn’t give away too much, so audiences will likely have to wait until December 19th to see what’s really going on!
We briefly see Sam Elliott in the trailer, and this quick appearance was enough to attract new audiences who may have not even watched Yellowstone! On social media, many Sam Elliott fans have already proclaimed that Y: 1883 would a huge hit simply because he had a starring role in the show!
Westerns. Y: 1883
Taylor Sheridan has brought his writing talents to many great Westerns. Y: 1883 might be his most ambitious project yet. The cast taken into the vast empty lands somewhere in the heart of Texas. This helped them get into character and helped them feel as if they were actually in the Old West, away from the distractions of the modern world.
Both Faith Hill and her husband Tim McGraw were also excited to be a part of the project. They’ll play James and Margaret Dutton, who were the ancestors of the current Dutton family.
Billy Bob Thornton plays Marshal Jim Courtright – another lead role in the show. Newcomer Isabel May plays Elsa. The show will follow the Dutton’s traversing the West with their son and daughter and a herd of cattle from Texas to Montana.
Sam Elliott Career
Sam Elliott’s character Shea Brennan will guide them through this arduous journey. No doubt there’ll be many hurdles in their way as they try to make it to Montana safely and protect their livestock.
While we don’t want to give away too much, we know that Shea Brennan is a wagon master and a Civil War veteran. His past haunts him, and we expect to see this reflected in his character throughout the series.
Throughout his career, many of the roles that Sam Elliott has played have included characters with a lot of depth. Many Westerns, including classic Westerns, have featured memorable, yet one-dimensional characters. Sam Elliott’s characters have always multi-faceted while still maintaining the classic Western attitude. We’re excited to see him bring Shea Brennan to life.
Sam Elliott Schedule
Sam Elliott spent much of the shooting schedule riding a horse. He recalled how the first month of shooting the show was rather tough. He and his cast members had to film outside in 100-degree weather! We’re sure the strenuous work will be worth it when Y: 1883 premieres on December 19th.
If you haven’t seen Yellowstone, you might want to get into it now so you can get an idea of what to expect. Fans of Yellowstone will no doubt be the first to tune into the prequel. We’re confident that it’s going to be a huge hit!
