Unfortunately, people prey on the elderly. Rather than seeing these people as someone to respect and look up to due to the time they have spent on this Earth, there are people who see them as someone to take advantage of. In some cases, they see the elderly as people to rob and use to get what they want. This is what happened with an elderly woman who was minding her business one day, just trying to get some cash.
Winifred Peel is a 77-year-old grandmother who lives alone. Her husband passed years earlier, and ever since, she was living on her own. Winifred lived a relatively active life. She went to the gym a few times a week for classes designed for the elderly. She also went on her own about four times a week to use the treadmill and to lift weights. It was something that she and her friends enjoyed doing. He was no longer able to drive, but she didn’t mind. Most of the places that she frequented were within walking distance. On most days, she took a walk to run her errands and headed home. Nothing out of the unusual happened until this one day.
On the day in question, Winifred was taking a walk near her home in Liverpool. He was planning to go to the ATM to get some cash, and then make a quick stop at the store. It was her day off from the gym, so she decided to have a quiet and relaxing day. Unfortunately, she was wrong.
Winifred was standing at the outdoor ATM, taking out £200. She could feel someone come up behind her. At first, she thought that it was another bank customer waiting to use the ATM. When they started getting closer to her, she realized that there was a good chance that she was wrong. Most bank customers understand ATM etiquette, and they remain far enough back as not to make the person using the ATM feel crowded. This isn’t what Winifred felt. Something told her that the people behind her wanted more than to take money out of the ATM after her.
Making Her Move
Winifred knew that something was off. She had a feeling the man behind her was going to try to rob her for her money, so she had to act fast. She had no idea at the time that there were three of them. As she turned around to start walking away from the ATM, she grabbed one of the men by the collar and started bashing his head into the ATM machine. One of the other boys grabbed the money from her hands as she was beating his friend, and they began shouting at her in Romanian. Next, all three men ran away.
After the incident, Winifred ran into the Barclay branch where she was taking out the money. She asked the teller inside to call the police, and she told them what happened. She sat down, still visibly shaken when she told the bank manager what happened. She told him that it all happened so fast, she didn’t even think about what would happen if one of the boys had a knife. She told them that she was just angry that even though she fought back, they still got away with her money.
The police came to the bank and asked to see the CCTV footage captured by the ATM cameras. They took the footage and had it played on the local news to get the names and addresses for the boys. The police got all of the information that they needed. Felix
The teens were all convicted of the crime. Stoica was sentenced to two years, Dumitru was sentenced to eight months, and Geblescu was sentenced to 18 months. At the sentencing, the judge said, “You targeted a vulnerable victim, a lady who was 77 years of age. Notwithstanding her age, she resisted, there was a struggle before you made your escape.
Winifred was thrilled with the judge’s decision. She thought that due to their young age, the boys would only get a slap on the wrist. She says that she didn’t leave the house for a while after the incident, but she is feeling better now. She says that it was the first fight that she had ever been in.
Shortly after the incident, Winifred’s story became international news. TV stations all over the world picked up the story, and it went viral on every social media platform. Winifred says that she can’t believe all of the attention that her story received.
