Zombie Apocalypse
If you have ever seen the TV shows, The Walking Dead or Fear the Walking Dead, you know how the characters struggle without access to supermarkets. In the early seasons, they traveled to different areas to scavenge abandoned houses and stores for food. Over time, they had picked these places clean, and they had two options. They could have traveled further and further away to find food, but with gas becoming scarce, this wasn’t a good option. Instead, they started trying to grow their own crops. With limited space and resources, they had to figure it out on their own. Have you ever wondered what you would do during a zombie apocalypse? You are going to need to grow your own food eventually, so you will need to know how to farm during a zombie apocalypse. Here are a few tips.
The Best Crops
During a zombie apocalypse, you likely won’t have access to a tractor and other farming equipment. You might also be limited on space, so you will want to grow the most nutrient-dense crops. Since you won’t have much space to plant, you should focus more on nutrition than taste if you are going to remain strong enough and healthy enough to fight off zombies when you need to. The optimal crops would be potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, and garlic. There are several reasons why these crops are the best.
Optimal Crops
Potatoes are packed with nutrients, including vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. Also, you can ferment your potatoes and make your own booze, which you might need after a long day of fighting off zombies. Sweet potatoes are loaded with nutrients, and they are an antioxidant, which will fight free radicals that can damage cells. Onions and garlic are nutritious and full of flavor. Garlic also has medicinal properties that you will find useful when the world ends.
Storage
Storage is also a consideration during a zombie apocalypse. You aren’t going to have access to climate-controlled storage facilities; therefore, you need crops that can be stored easily. If you live in a colder climate, you are going to need to grow and store enough food for the winter, so storage is key. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, and garlic can all be stored in a sick or a bin. As long as you keep them out of the sun and the rain, they will last a while.
Water
During a zombie apocalypse, water is going to be scarce, and you won’t have access to sophisticated irrigation systems, so you need to grow crops like the ones listed because they don’t require much irrigation and water.
Pests
During a zombie apocalypse, you aren’t going to have access to pesticides, so you are going to need to figure something out. To keep crows away, you can simply make a scarecrow. If you have someone in your group who is good with a bow and arrow, you can set them up somewhere to take out the crows and serve roasted crow for dinner.
To keep bugs away, it is going to be a bit more complicated. You will need to combine water and bleach (If you can find any), and hand wash each plant to keep the pests away.
Find Some Livestock
While crops are essential, you should see if you can find some livestock. Chickens should be relatively easy to find, and they will provide your community with eggs every day. Larger livestock might be more challenging to find, and they are a lot of work. They can also be hard to care for. You are going to need to feed these animals and give them water until you are ready to cook them. Unless you have a skilled butcher in the community, this can be difficult. Of all the livestock to choose from, milk-producing cows are the best. You will need to feed the cows, but the milk they produce will be worth it. If you come across a cow that doesn’t produce milk, it can provide enough meat to get you through the winter. Also, you can use the cow’s fat to make soap, which will be scarce during a zombie apocalypse.
What You Will Need
To feed your community, you are going to need between three and four acres of crops. This can feed a dozen people for a year. You should try to find chickens and cows. Finally, if you have a tracker and hunter in the community, keep them safe. They can bring home plenty of different types of meats for the community. If you lose this person, you could very well lose your food source. Living during a zombie apocalypse won’t be easy, but if you can raise and grow your own food, you have a chance at survival.
