Steve Irwin

Steve Irwin, aka the Crocodile Hunter, was a nature conservationist. He loved being outdoors, surrounded by wildlife. Ever since he was a child, he absolutely loved the outdoors. He got his love of the outdoors and all creatures from his parents. His father, Bob, is a wildlife expert who specialized in herpetology. His mother, Lyn, is a wildlife rehabilitator. When Steve was very young, his parents started the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park. There, Steve grew up around crocodiles and other reptiles. He knew from a very young age that he was destined to work with animals.

Steve’s Involvement

Steve got involved with the park in many ways. He helped out with the daily animal feeding. He also helped with the care and maintenance of the animals and their enclosures. When he was just 6-years-old, he was given a 12-foot scrub python. When he was 9, he started handling crocodiles, and his father began teaching him about reptiles. Later, he volunteered at the Queensland’s East Coast Crocodile Management program where over 100 crocodiles were brought to be relocated. Some crocodiles were housed in Steve’s family’s park. In 1991, Steve took over the management of the Park and renamed it Australia Zoo in 1998.

Family

Steve met his soulmate, Terri in 1991. It was love at first sight. They met at the zoo and were engaged four months later. They started working together, and Teri became as passionate about animals as Steve was. In 1998, they had their first child, a daughter named Bindi. Later, they had a son named Robert. Family meant everything to Steve, and he involved his family in many of the things that he did.

Television

Steve’s love of animals and his reputation with at the Australia Zoo became well-known. This brought him plenty of television opportunities. He starred in his own show called The Crocodile Hunter, which he worked on with his wife. He was also involved with Croc Files and The Crocodile Hunter Diaries. He even did a direct to video movie with The Wiggles call The Wiggly Safari. His career shifted from working in the zoo to working on film, television series, and TV specials. Steve was so popular that the offers were pouring in. As they did, his success grew.

Steve’s Death

Sadly, Steve’s life was cut short. When he was just 44-years-old, he was filming an underwater documentary called, Ocean’s Deadliest. While filming, he was pierced in the heart by a stingray barb, and he died instantly. The crew tried CPR to save him, but it was no use. The footage of Steve’s death was viewed by the local police and then destroyed at his family’s request. The last thing they wanted
was for the footage to be leaked to the media. Steve’s fans were crushed, and his family was devastated. After a private memorial service, he was laid to rest in the Australia Zoo where visitors can visit his grave.

The Letter

Steve’s father found a letter that Steve wrote him 12 years before his death. It fell out of a book that Steve’s father was reading. In the letter, he thanked his parents for helping to build his character and his ethics. He also thanked them for giving him such a happy childhood. He credited his parents for his strength and endurance. He finished the letter by telling them that they were his best friends.
