Way back in 1980, Dolly Parton sat down with Chet Flippo of Rolling Stone magazine for what she thought was just going to be a typical interview, but she ended up spilling the beans on one of the most embarrassing chapters of her life instead.
Flippo asked Parton about what the most outrageous thing she’d ever done was. Somewhat reluctantly, Parton started telling him a story about a friend of hers named Judy who she says was just as mischievous as she was. One night, after grabbing a bite to eat and knocking back a few margaritas, she and Judy were heading back to their hotels in separate vehicles.
Judy and two of her friends were in one car and Dolly was in another vehicle accompanied by her keyboardist Greff Perry. While driving side by side, the two women started acting really goofy and doing silly things to provoke each other from their separate vehicles. Things escalated quickly as both Judy and Dolly tried to top each other’s antics.
Parton says that then Judy started unbuttoning her blouse presumably to flash her but before she could, Dolly beat her to the punch, pulling up her shirt and nearly causing an accident. Everybody in both vehicles started laughing hysterically. They thought it was hilarious and for good reason! Can you imagine glancing over to see that?
After Parton flashed her world-famous double-Ds, Judy flashed her goods right back, so Dolly upped the ante by giving her a little glimpse of her backside. Yup, you could say that there was a full moon that night.
Dolly knew at this point that Judy was going to try to out-do her once again, so she figured she would go ahead and remove all of her clothes to top whatever Judy might try and do. How could she compete with that?
Dolly Revealed How She Felt Afterwards
Parton asked Perry not to look as she stripped down. She says that she felt somewhat rushed to disrobe because she knew that Judy was already trying to strip down to her leggings. She didn’t have much time.
Both vehicles were approaching an intersection with a red light so Parton was fairly certain that Judy would be ready to make her move once they got there. She had to be quick if she wanted to outdo her.
When the cars made it to the intersection, Judy got out of the vehicle and took off her pants revealing her pantyhose. She must have thought that she was the winner of the ‘competition’ for a second, that is until Dolly opened up her car door and casually, yet confidently strolled out into the moonlight in nothing but her birthday suit.
She took a little stroll around the cars and then jumped back into hers. Although she was trying her best to project an air of confidence, she told Rolling Stone that she was actually super embarrassed on the inside. At the same time, however, the fact that she actually had the courage to go through with it gave her a feeling of pride and accomplishment for what she had done.
Hey, before we move on, would you mind taking a moment to give us a like and a subscribe? And don’t go anywhere just yet. We’ve still got a lot of material to cover. Stick around to find out if Dolly’s ever posed nude for a magazine and what her views towards plastic surgery are.
Has Dolly Ever Posed Nude For A Magazine?
When Dolly was 32 years old she posed for Playboy Magazine.
Parton was featured on the cover of the October 1978 issue of Playboy magazine. For the shoot, she wore the magazine’s iconic bunny outfit complete with rabbit ears, sequin cuffs and a bowtie. The image was captioned with the phrase “Country Queen Dolly Parton”.
Parton has always been a modest woman especially when she was in her 30s and didn’t want to pose fully nude. Rather, she posed for a cover-up photo instead. She was much too shy to pose fully naked for a layout.
Dolly showed off her old Playboy cover photo last year on social media. She actually ended up sparking a trend that became known as the ‘Dolly Parton Challenge’ where users competed to find unique or eccentric pictures of themselves that would be appropriate to be used profile photos on Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, and Linkedin respectively.
Naturally, Dolly chose the Playboy cover photo as her Tinder profile pic.
Dolly Explained Why She Posed For Playboy
Dolly was the first country singer to ever pose for Playboy, but she made sure that she laid out her boundaries before going in for the shoot. She had one hard rule that she was unwilling to compromise on. She refused to be photographed in the nude. No exceptions.
She says that she was asked several times back in the day to pose au natural, but that was never something that she felt like was for her. She did appreciate the article that Playboy ran about her though and appearing in the magazine helped market herself to a wider audience. if you didn’t know who she was before, you certainly did then. It was arguably one of the catalysts of her finding mainstream success.
She Says She Wants To Pose Again
Parton sat down for an interview with 60 Minutes Australia last March. In the interview, she made it very clear that she has no plans of retiring anytime soon. She also mentioned that she had the desire to pose for Playboy’s cover once again for her next birthday which would be in January of 2021.
She said that it would be such a ‘hoot’, as she put it if they agreed to let her do it. At 75, she would be the oldest woman to ever pose for the magazine.
That interview was published just a few weeks before Playboy announced that they would be suspending the printing of the magazine due to the coronavirus pandemic.
She spoke once again about her desire to grace the cover of the iconic magazine back in October, and Playboy seemed to indicate that they were also interested in doing a repeat shoot with Parton. They even went on record to indicate that a cover oppurtunity was waiting for her whenever she was interested.
Playboy’s Print Magazine Is No More
So, you might be wondering what happened to Dolly’s Playboy reunion. It’s been months since her birthday in January, so what gives?
Well, when Ben Kohn, CEO of Playboy Enterprises announced last march that the Spring 2020 issue would be the last issue to be printed until the pandemic had passed, it quickly became clear that there were no actual plans to revive print edition of the magazine at a later date. It would seem that the company had finally come to terms with the fact that their cash cow was no longer producing milk.
Print magazines across the board have been struggling to maintain readership and subscribers in the digital age, and Playboy’s niche appeal has taken a major thrashing by the internet. The magazine has hardly seemed relevant in years.
The decision to move to a digital-only format now seems to be a permanent move, but the company has yet to officially acknowledge this yet. So as of right now, the prospect of Dolly ever gracing the cover of the magazine ever again is looking pretty slim, but not altogether impossible. We just wouldn’t encourage anyone to hold their breath waiting for it to happen.
Now, she could always do a shoot for the website, but it seems like the company is pushing their merchandise and apparel over there at the moment more so than their pictorials. It’s no secret that Playboy is having a bit of an identity crisis at the moment. So, we’ll have to keep our eyes on this story for a while to see how it ends up playing out.
Dolly’s Plastic Surgery
Dolly has historically been very open to discuss just about anything in interviews, which we’ve already made quite clear by telling you that little public nudity story. Nothing seems to be off-limits and she seems to take great pride in the fact she is an open-book.
Back in 2011, she sat down with The Guardian again and gave a very candid interview addressing her signature look, admitting that she isn’t anything close to being what she called a ‘natural beauty’. Sure, she’s been the butt of a lot of plastic surgery jokes over the years, but she’s not oblivious to that reality in the least bit. She just doesn’t let it negatively affect her. Parton isn’t ashamed of anything she’s done or the choices she’s made for her own body.
She once famously said that if something is bagging, sagging, or dragging, she’ll tuck it, suck it, or pluck it.
Let that one sink in for a second….
But seriously, she’s very open to telling you about the cosmetic procedures that she has undergone over the years. She told CBS Sunday Morning back in 2019 that even though she wasn’t born all that beautiful but she has taken great strides to enhance her natural beauty through whatever means she deems necessary.
She labeled her aesthetic as being something akin to country girl glam and fully admitted to the fact that she looks artificial. But that’s who she is. That’s kind of her signature look, and honestly we think it works really well for her.
That’s the thing about Dolly. She’s not about to apologize for being who she is. Ever since she was a child, she has remained steadfast and dedicated to remaining true to herself, regardless of what the haters say or what the tabloids print.
She told The Guardian that it’s never been her intention to be fashionable. She dresses how she likes, sleeps with her make-up on ‘just in case’, and isn’t afraid to go under the knife if she feels like it. She’s got nothing to prove to anyone but herself and she’s developed the reputation for doing her own thing. It’s true though, that nobody will ever be Dolly. She is distinctly her own person, living by her own set rules and expectations. And we’ve just got to say that she’s an inspiration because of that.
So yeah, it’s pretty uncertain if she’ll ever get the chance to pose for Playboy again, but you can almost guarantee that Dolly Parton isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.
